Chelsea dealt £88m double injury blow ahead of Newcastle United tie – 10 players ruled out
Chelsea will be without Marc Cucurella and Robert Sanchez for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final clash against Newcastle United (kick-off 8pm).
The pair missed the Blues’ 2-0 victory over Sheffield United on Saturday. Cucurella was pictured in a hospital bed at the weekend after undergoing surgery on his ankle, while Sanchez has a knee issue.
Following the news of Reece James’ hamstring injury last week, Mauricio Pochettino is now without both his starting full-backs and No.1 Sanchez.
Against the Blades, summer signing Djordje Petrovic started in between the stick with Axel Disasi at right-back and Levi Colwill at left-back.
Chelsea are expected to be without 10 senior players against Newcastle with Ben Chilwell, Wesley Fofana, Romeo Lavia, Noni Madueke, Trevoh Chalobah, Lesley Ugochukwu and Carney Chukwuemeka ruled out.
“We have a lot of injury issues and it’s like building a house and some of the stuff are not there but we need to keep believing,” Pochettino said. “The roof? Not there yet. We have good people building the house, good architects. We have the best company, architects, very creative and good – already proven.
“But when you want to build something you need solid foundations which sometimes are affected because of the nature of the circumstances. You dig the hole and there is water, it is not because of the company. An unexpected situation which delays the possibility to move quicker than you expected. Unfortunately, we received too many hits against us.”
