Bruno Fernandes wins player of the month at United

September 3, 2023

Bruno Fernandes has secured Manchester United’s Player of the Month accolade for August, following a supporters’ vote. The 28-year-old was instrumental in United’s dramatic comeback win against Nottingham Forest, netting a goal and providing an assist as Erik ten Hag’s squad overturned a 2-0 deficit to secure all three points at Old Trafford.

In addition to his Forest heroics, Bruno shone in United’s 1-0 curtain-raiser victory over Wolves. A deft lob from Fernandes found Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who then teed up Raphael Varane for the match-winning header.

Now donning the captain’s armband, the Portuguese maestro has kicked off the new season on a high note, solidifying his role as a linchpin in Ten Hag’s starting eleven.

The voting for the award was a neck-and-neck affair, with Bruno narrowly outpacing team-mate Wan-Bissaka, garnering 46% of the vote compared to Aaron’s 42%.

This marks the ninth occasion that Bruno has clinched this honour, his most recent being one of consecutive wins in March and April of the previous season.

Earning the first Player of the Month gong for the 2023/24 season, Fernandes has helped United gather six out of a potential nine Premier League points thus far.

Predominantly deployed in the attacking midfield position, the No. 8 has sustained his influential form from the previous campaign. Since his 2020 arrival at the Theatre of Dreams, no other Premier League player has crafted more significant scoring opportunities than Bruno, a trend he’s maintained in his inaugural season as captain.

Continued brilliance from Fernandes has become something of a staple for United fans, who are undoubtedly keen for him to remain a key figure in the team’s quest for success this season.

Finishing third in the voting for the August award was new shot-stopper Andre Onana, who impressed enough to take home 12% of the fan vote in his debut month.

But ultimately, it’s Bruno Fernandes who takes home the first Player of the Month award for the new campaign. Congratulations, Bruno!
