Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry loved rooting for Germany at EURO 2024

August 5, 2024

Germany’s feel-good EURO 2024 home tournament is one of the inspiring football stories of the summer. But several national team veterans had to cheer from the sidelines after being excluded from head coach Julian Nagelsmann’s final squad.

Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry was one of them, and the 29-year-old former Arsenal FC man talked balancing his cheering with his personal disappointment in an interview for Süddeutsche Zeitung.

“Of course, this is my team, my country. Sometimes you catch yourself thinking: what am I actually doing here, I should be there,” Gnabry said of his experience watching from afar. “It’s extremely bitter when you can’t be there, especially at a home EUROs. I kept my fingers crossed for the team and was happy about every win.”

As for his rating of Germany’s performance? Thumbs up.

“Very positive. Let’s not talk about the penalty scene against Spain, but regardless of that I thought we played good football, definitely much better than in previous tournaments. The energy was there, the country was there, there was a unity on the pitch, a real team. That was nice to see. I think we’re back on the right track,” Gnabry concluded.
