Barcelona set to sign 2023 U17 World Cup superstar forward
Ibrahim Diarra was one of the biggest emerging stars from the recently concluded FIFA U17 World Cup, which was won by Germany.
The young attacker was the main man for Mali – a nation that surprised everyone by finishing third in the competition.
Indeed, Diarra scored five goals and registered four assists in just seven games in the competition, ending as one of the tournament’s brightest performers.
Barcelona closing in on Diarra capture
Even before the tournament had ended, Barcelona had always kept a close eye on Diarra’s performances and were interested in acquiring his services.
Now, a recent update from Adrian Sanchez suggests that the Catalans have everything closed for the signing of the Malian whizkid.
This is a massive boost for the Catalans, who are closing in on an agreement with Diarra’s academy in his native Mali.
The youngster currently plies his trade for Africa Foot, though he has largely made his name playing for the Mali youth team.
Where does Diarra fit in?
Despite Barcelona’s swift pursuit of Ibrahim Diarra, coupled with his performances at the FIFA U17 World Cup, it is unlikely that the youngster will be roped in as part of the first team.
Barcelona are likely pursuing him as a potential reinforcement for the Barça Athletic squad, where the Malian face a lot of competition.
Needless to say, the reserve side has produced a series of young players in recent years and Diarra has to prove himself there before he can be considered for the senior team.
In Rafael Marquez, the 17-year-old will have excellent leadership, though, which could go a long way in furthering his progress.
