Bayern Munich honors departing players but not coach Thomas Tuchel in home finale vs. VfL Wolfsburg

May 13, 2024

“We will make up for it…we promise,” promised the stadium announcer.

Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel did not get an official send-off in his final home game in charge of the Bavarians — despite prior reporting that it would happen.

Prior to Sunday’s kickoff vs. VfL Wolfsburg, the Allianz Arena stadium announcer made the follow announcement (as captured by @iMiaSanMia): “We’re not bidding farewell to our coaching staff led by Thomas Tuchel today, the season is not over yet. We will make up for it in a fitting way — we promise.”

Here is the prior report, from Bild and captured via @iMiaSanMia:

Thomas Tuchel will be acknowledged by Bayern bosses with a few words and probably a small present ahead of Sunday’s game against Wolfsburg, his last game at Allianz Arena as Bayern coach [@BILD]

If not now, when? There won’t be any more home games for Tuchel to preside over — unless the improbable happens and he sticks around for another year. Max Eberl explained, however.

“I sat down with Thomas and we both said that it didn’t feel right [to do it] before the penultimate matchday,” the Bayern sporting boss said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We still have something to lose, which is second place.”

Two other departing Bayern members who did get recognition, though: right-back Bouna Sarr and striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. Here is Sarr being presented with flowers from sporting bosses Max Eberl and Christoph Freund:

“We would like to thank Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Bouna Sarr for four very successful years together. Both have contributed to FC Bayern becoming champions three times during this time and winning the Club World Cup and the German Supercup. FC Bayern wishes them both all the best for the future,” announced Eberl.

Neither player was available even off the bench on Sunday, but at least they were able to be recognized for the last time in Bayern colors at the Allianz. As for Tuchel? His time will surely come before it is all said and done.
