Barella, Lukaku’s Goals Give Inter 2-0 Victory Over Benfica In UCL Q’Finals First Leg
Inter Milan took home a crucial 2-0 victory over Benfica in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.
Nicolo Barella’s header in the 51st minute broke the deadlock, followed by a penalty by substitute, Romelu Lukaku that sealed the win for the Serie A side. Although the game was tense with both teams struggling to create chances, Inter’s rare moment of attacking quality was enough to give them the edge.
In the first half, both teams found it hard to break the deadlock, with Inter only managing two touches in Benfica’s box. Although the hosts shaded the first half, they failed to capitalise on their chances, with Rafa Silva missing a golden opportunity after pouncing on Federico Dimarco’s loose header.
Despite their efforts, Benfica was unable to find the back of the net as Inter seized the initiative in the second half and produced the two winning goals through Barella and Lukaku. The result leaves Inter in control heading into the second leg.
Inter’s victory puts them in a comfortable position heading as the reverse fixture will be played at San Siro next Wednesday. In their next fixtures, both of which are on Saturday, Benfica is away to Chavez in the Liga Portugal while Inter host Monza in the Serie A.
