Barcelona target could sign a new contract with Bayern Munich

February 22, 2023

The crunching economic situation has forced Barcelona to turn to free agents and players out-of-favour at their clubs as new signings in recent windows. Yet, the restriction has not stopped the Catalans from bringing in quality names, with Andreas Christensen and Frank Kessie being a few such successes.

The Blaugrana’s scouting has clearly gone up a notch in identifying high-calibre players available at a reasonable price. One such player on the team’s radar for the coming transfer windows was Benjamin Pavard.

The French right-back has a contract with Bayern Munich until the summer of 2024. Though more than a season remains on his deal, his altercations with the manager and coaching staff made him a prospect to be available at a reasonable cost.

According to reports from SPORT, the defender is slowly distancing himself as a target for the Catalans. Despite initially being linked with Xavi Hernanadez’s side, Pavard has seemingly fixed his relations with Julian Nagelsmann and has begun talks over a possible renewal with Bayern Munich.

The player has not taken any binding decision over his future, and an exit is still on the cards. However, Inter Milan’s instant withdrawal from the race, whilst still being interested in the player, shows the probability of his departure that now remains.

Barcelona met with Pavard’s agent, Pini Zahavi, earlier this month when the defender’s possible move was the topic of discussion.

A fee of around €30 million has been touted which is considered pricey by the Catalan club’s administration. Nevertheless, the situation now has turned on its back.

The 26-year-old has made 18 league appearances for the German champions, scoring one goal and providing one assist. He has overseen five clean sheets and averages over 11 defensive actions per game.
