Barcelona starlet’s future decision could be influenced by key change in national team selection policy

July 27, 2024

Vitor Roque finds himself in the headlines of late as his future at FC Barcelona has become a topic of much speculation.

Even though the 19-year-old arrived only seven months ago, it appears that he could be on the move this summer and Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal have shown a strong interest in signing him.

The teenage striker, though, has been reluctant to consider a departure, especially to the Middle Eastern club, but a key change in policy with the Brazilian national team might influence his decision now.

Brazil coach Dorival Junior makes an important decision
Indeed, according to SPORT, going to the Saudi Pro League no longer means closing the door on the national team for Brazilian players.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), in conjunction with manager Dorival Junior, has decided to change its position regarding the Brazilian players who play in Saudi Arabia and, from now on, they will be considered for selection and called up by the coach.

While it was never an explicit directive, it was assumed that Neymar Jr. was the only exception to the CBF when it came to selecting players in Arabia. But that is no longer the case.

During the Copa America, goalkeeper Bento asked Dorival Junior and the CBF if he would continue to be called up if he accepted an offer from Saudi Arabia. And the answer was positive, following which he has signed for Al Nassr.

Therefore, if Vitor Roque decides to leave Barcelona for Al Hilal this summer, he will still retain his status as an eligible player for the Selecao and could be called up.

The CBF’s stance could help ‘Tigrinho’ and his family decide to accept the offer being put together by Al Hilal, where former Barcelona stars Neymar Jr. and Malcom also play.

Barcelona are ready to open the doors for Roque’s exit, but will only accept the formula of a transfer that would bring in at least €40 million.
