Barcelona see their first offer for Euro 2024 star fall flat

July 25, 2024

One of the worst-kept secrets of this summer transfer window is Barcelona’s interest in signing Nico Williams and Dani Olmo. As the Spanish club goes about their negotiations, the entire footballing world watches to see how these pan out.

Sporting director Deco met with Olmo’s agents in a meeting that lasted over two hours yesterday. The Spanish club offered the 26-year-old a six-year contract. Barcelona want to bring the La Masia graduate back to the club.

The difficult part of every negotiation is agreeing on a transfer fee with the selling club. As per SPORT, Barcelona have made an offer to RB Leipzig for Dani Olmo but the German club has deemed the offer too low and unacceptable.

The report adds that it’s not just the money that the Catalan club has offered for the player that Leipzig doesn’t agree with. The Bundesliga club is not happy with the payment structure proposed by Barcelona either.

However, this is nothing to worry about since most first offers in a transfer negotiation are always low-balled and are just a way to start a dialogue between the two clubs. It seldom meets the expectations of the selling club.

That said, the silver lining in this situation is that if Barcelona have made an official offer to RB Leipzig, it likely means that they have some kind of indication from Dani Olmo that he is willing to accept the proposed contract and join the club.

A diminutive midfielder who excels in the #10 role, Olmo is one of the most underrated playmakers in the world. His performances for La Roja in the recently concluded Euros have brought him to the limelight.

The Spaniard has been one of RB Leipzig’s most consistent players over the last few seasons when fit. Having been trained in La Masia, he is no stranger to the Barcelona way of playing football which can be seen in his passing.

Having been engrossed in the Nico operation for some time, it looks like the club have turned their attention to Olmo now. It remains to be seen if Barcelona return with a second, more acceptable offer for the 26-year-old.
