Barcelona might give up on one of their most promising young talents
Barcelona have been unearthing some of European football’s finest young talents, with right winger Lamine Yamal currently grabbing the continent in a chokehold with his consistency and dazzling dribbling.
Before that, the twin powers of Gavi and Pedri made their mark in midfield, and though Gavi suffered a season-ending injury, Pedri is starting to show that same top-class quality after shedding injury woes of his own.
At the beginning of the season, Barcelona had another exciting young midfield talent making his mark in Fermin López, who had a few commanding displays, attracting attention with his fleet feet.
However, López has barely featured for the Blaugrana since then. The 20-year-old has not even started a game since Dec. 20, even though the skill set he showed at the beginning of the season would seemingly help a third-place Barça.
Diario Sport report that Fermin’s future is now up in the air with a summer transfer possible. It is reportedly more likely that Fermin will be loaned by Barça, but even that points to his long-term future being outside of Catalunya.
It would be a shame if Barcelona cannot find a role for Fermin or capitalize on the progression and dribbling skills he showed. Fermin can be a workhorse and has the raw, technical traits that fit the exact profile of the midfielder Barça love.
Even as a rotational piece, Fermin could make a serious impact for the Blaugrana, especially with how grueling the schedule is in the modern game and the demands of competing in both LaLiga and the Champions League.
As Gavi’s injury unfortunately showed Culers, depth is so important and anyone can go down at any moment. You’d think that with the injury issues Barça have faced, Fermin would have more of a role in Xavi’s plans.
In this case, Barça’s loss could be someone else’s gain, and if the club sell him too soon, they risk losing out on a higher transfer fee for a high-upside U21 talent.
Fermin had three dribbles completed, two fouls drawn, and a chance created in a game-changing appearance in a 1-0 win over Sevilla earlier in the season. He can offer this team something.
