Barcelona keeping tabs on Liverpool midfielder to sign as a free agent
FC Barcelona are currently in the middle of a dilemma of sorts when it comes to their midfielders. Constant injuries are hindering the progress of La Blaugrana and a lot of that has to do with the inconsistent presence of their key players in the middle of the field.
Moreover, versatility is something that is valued highly in Barcelona and continues to be a key trait among their talented midfield depth. Despite that, they currently only have 32-year-old Oriol Romeu as their primary and only specialist pivot in the team.
Eyes on Liverpool
A recent report by ESPN brought light to the possibility of Joshua Kimmich being of interest to Barcelona. As a result, SPORT now believes that another player that catches the eye of the Catalan giants plays in Liverpool.
The star in question is none other than former La Masia talent Thiago Alcantara. Currently 32 years of age, Thiago is a well-renowned and established star in the grand European scheme.
Free agent next summer
Moreover, his contract comes to an end in June of next year and given Barça’s strategy of going after free agents, it fits in line for La Blaugrana to take advantage of such an opportunity. Given Thiago’s proven quality and experience, he is believed to be a great fit for Xavi’s Barça.
Currently out injured due to a problem with his hip flexor, his return to action for Liverpool has been delayed. As a result of a relapse, the player is still recovering and is counting down the days before he can be fit again to represent his Merseyside team.
Life after Barcelona
Prior to Liverpool, Thiago also played at Bayern Munich for seven years after leaving Barcelona. His time with the Bavarian giants was heavily successful and in turn, made him a great attraction for Liverpool as well.
In the scenario that Barça does end up approaching him, SPORT believes he would be more than happy to wrap up his story in the Catalan capital. Having been at Barça from 2005 all the way until 2013, the player would understandably hold deep connections to the club that helped him develop.
