Barcelona eyeing the most underrated big-club manager

February 29, 2024

Barcelona are on the hunt for their next manager after Xavi officially steps down from the club at the end of the season, and there are so many great options to choose from.

Julian Nagelsmann, Hansi Flick, Roberto De Zerbi, and even Jürgen Klopp and José Mourinho have all been linked to the Blaugrana post.

Another big name can be added to the list, as Italian outlet Tuttosport reports that Barcelona are keeping an eye on Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi as a possible Xavi replacement.

The Nerazzurri are hard at work to keep Inzaghi in Milan for the foreseeable future, as they are trying to sign the Italian manager to a contract extension.

After facing calls for his job in the middle of the 2022/23 season, Inzaghi immediately turned things around and made Inter a European juggernaut.

With better finishing from Romelu Lukaku in the final, they could have won the Champions League title over Pep Guardiola‘s Manchester City.

Inzaghi has maximized his squad, developed players, found key roles for veterans, recruited the right faces, and changed the game with innovative ideas like the way he uses subs or his wing-backs.

For all that he has done for Inter and the way he has answered the critics, Inzaghi just might be the most underrated manager of any club at the top level.

Inzaghi doesn’t get credit for being an elite manager in the mainstream, but his body of work for both Lazio and Inter should put him up there with the likes of De Zerbi over Nagelsmann, even though those two get more plaudits.

It’s likely Inzaghi will stay with Inter, as the Nerazzurri are the clear favorites to win Serie A this season. But when Barcelona come calling, few turn down the opportunity to be a part of the legacy of the Blaugrana.
