Barcelona closely following La Liga midfield prodigy who debuted in Messi’s final game
Barcelona have their eyes set on talented young footballers across the globe as they look to sign players before they blow up on the international stage.
The Catalans did this successfully with Pedri and Ronald Araujo in the past, and tried it again with Pablo Torre, currently unsuccessfully, though.
Now, according to reports by SPORT, Barcelona are keeping tabs on Celta Vigo teenager Hugo Sotelo.
A historic debut
Sotelo made his debut for Celta Vigo two seasons ago, playing coming off the bench for a minute to face Barcelona. That game was historical for another reason, though, as it was Lionel Messi’s last game for the Catalans.
He then went on to play a game in the 2021/22 season, and another one in 2022/23 before finally making his place in the team this season.
So far, he has played three games in La Liga, starting two – against Osasuna and Real Sociedad.
While he is yet to register any goal contributions so far, Celta are more than happy with his performances, and will likely keep him as part of the first team as the season wears on.
Competition from Madrid
Sotelo’s contract with Celta Vigo runs out in 2025 with his release clause at just €10 million. This makes him a low-risk high-reward signing for any big club, especially considering his rather great potential.
Barcelona are joined by none other than Real Madrid in the race for the Spaniard’s signature. Both teams were also in the bidding for their wonderkid midfielder Gabri Veiga in the summer, even though the player eventually left for Al-Ahli for €40 million.
Sotelo will have the chance to impress his potential future employers this weekend, though, as Celta Vigo take on Barcelona away from home.
