Barcelona believe they need a marquee signing in attack this summer
As we enter the last couple of weeks of the summer transfer window, Barcelona are still working on ways to improve the squad.
Barça manager Xavi Hernandez has made it clear that he still wishes to sign a new right-back and a creative midfielder before the window closes.
But, apart from those two positions, though, SPORT is reporting that Barcelona believe they need to bring in a marquee signing in the attacking department as well.
Financially motivated move
At a time when Barcelona will be playing at the Montjuic Olympic Stadium owing to the renovations at Camp Nou, they need to make up for the loss in revenue in some manner.
As such, the La Liga champions believe that a ‘star signing’ in attack could help them in that regard, by maximising ticket sales at their temporary home as well as other possible marketing opportunities.
To that end, attempts were made to sign Lionel Messi very early in the summer, but that did not come to fruition.
The focus then moved to Neymar, with the Brazilian international also being keen on the move.
However, an arrangement for his signing in a feasible operation could not be achieved, and Xavi was also not in favour of the signing, and as such the 31-year-old signed for Al Hilal.
Joao Felix, the plan B?
With Neymar slipping out, the attention has now shifted towards Joao Felix of Atletico Madrid.
President Joan Laporta is a known admirer of the 23-year-old forward while several from the club’s administration believe he can be a star addition to the squad while making a difference on the pitch.
Xavi, though, is not convinced by Felix either, but would not object to his signing as long as he gets a right-back and another midfielder first.
But for Barça to sign these many players, they might have to offload more of their current stars, with Clement Lenglet, Sergino Dest, and one of Ansu Fati or Ferran Torres, possibly being shown the doors.
