Barca test blockchain with Barça Fan Lab launch

September 28, 2026

Barcelona have launched Barça Fan Lab, a new digital fan platform built with technology partner Andamio on the Cardano blockchain, as the club dips into Web3 for fan participation and recognition.

The platform connects to the existing BarçaID system, letting supporters complete learning pathways and community activities before earning verifiable digital credentials and access tokens, stored in an individual Cardano portfolio. It’s part of Cardano’s community-driven grant programme, Project Catalyst Fund 13.

The content is structured around four areas. The first covers the club’s history, identity and values, including the meaning of ‘Més que un club’. A second tackles sustainability, inclusion, women’s empowerment and responsible digital innovation. The third looks at linking physical communities with digital participation, and the fourth introduces practical Web3 applications, from digital collectibles and loyalty systems to NFTs and smart contracts.

Barcelona say these as areas for learning and experimentation rather than confirmed use cases, and the longer-term goal is a scalable participation model for its global fanbase.

It’s an interesting move, and one that will divide opinion. Blockchain and Web3 in football have a chequered recent history, with fan tokens drawing plenty of scepticism. Positioning this as an educational, participation-led platform rather than a straight monetisation play is a more careful approach. Whether Barça’s global support embraces it or greets it with the same wariness that has met other crypto ventures in the game remains to be seen.
