Alexander Nübel may still have a future at Bayern Munich

With the ever-dependable Manuel Neuer between the posts, the goalkeeper position at Bayern Munich is practically non-existent, but that could change soon. The 36-year-old German international has been plagued by a string of injuries that could lead to his retirement in the next two years or so. His age also doesn’t do him justice in this situation, so the much-coveted starting spot at goal could be up for grabs in the near future. Though Sven Ulreich has done an excellent job of holding things together until Neuer returns, he is unlikely to be the one to replace the sweeper-keeper. Who is the likely replacement? According to Sport Bild (as transcribed by @iMiaSanMia), sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidi and technical director Marco Neppe flew from Munich to Nice, France. This trip was made in order to meet with Alexander Nübel and discuss his future. Nübel, who made a name for himself on loan at AS Monaco, has ruled out a return to Bayern as long as Manuel Neuer is still at the club.

This trip, according to Nübel’s agent Stefan Backs, is a “completely normal process.” “They’re watching their player on site,” he explained.

Bayern’s top brass are completely convinced of Nübel and want him to succeed Neuer. With the youngster’s loan expiring in 2023 and his contract with the Bavarians expiring in 2025, now is the time to make any future plans. As a result, Salihamidi and Neppe will have to do a lot of convincing. With the duo’s recent track record, we could soon see Nübel between the posts at Bayern.
