Alexander Isak reacts to controversial last-minute PSG penalty vs Newcastle

November 29, 2023

Alexander Isak has revealed that he thinks PSG should not have been given a last-minute penalty against Newcastle United in their 1-1 draw at the Parc des Princes.

Isak’s opening goal gave Newcastle huge hopes of qualifying for the knockout rounds of the Champions League, but a controversial VAR decision in added time would break Geordie hearts.

Isak spoke to TNT Sports after the game and revealed that his initial reaction was that it was not a penalty and that it looked ‘cheap’, but that he was very proud of the team’s overall performance.

Isak says penalty was ‘cheap’
Pretty much anyone and everyone involved in football has claimed that PSG’s penalty for a Tino Livramento handball was absolutely the wrong decision and a disappointing end to what was otherwise a great game.

Livramento, who had done so well all night to keep out PSG, was punished for an accidental handball in which the ball had actually come off his chest first before hitting his elbow.

Now, Isak has revealed how shocked he was to see the referee award the penalty after being recommended to look at the monitor by VAR.

In his interview after the game, Isak said: “Unfortunate for us to get a goal against us so late. I think we started defending our goal a bit too early. It’s never nice to concede a goal that late.

“My first reaction was it wasn’t [a penalty]. It seemed cheap. I haven’t seen a replay. Hopefully it was a penalty. We have to trust the referees.
