Alan Shearer has already spotted one problem if Leeds United get promoted to the Premier League

April 8, 2025

Daniel Farke remains “100% convinced” that Leeds United will be promoted to the Premier League though pursuit of a place in the top tier may not come by finishing in the top two.

Leeds United have fallen into third in the Championship table following Saturday’s draw with Luton Town, with Burnley going ahead of Leeds as Scott Parker’s all-conquering side came beat in-form Coventry.

Sheffield United’s shock 1-0 loss to Oxford United made Leeds’ point at Luton better than initially feared. But with six games to go, as things stand, Leeds will be in the play-offs for a second consecutive season.

Luton boss Matt Bloomfield says he expects Leeds to go up despite their current position. They will need to win at least four or five of their remaining six games if they are to overtake Burnley or Sheffield United.

Alan Shearer identifies problem Leeds could have after promotion

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer discussed the limitations of spending Profit & Sustainability Rules put on clubs, and how it makes it impossible for promoted sides to spend what they need to, to close the gap.

Shearer thinks that whoever comes up from the Championship to the Premier League will have the same issue that Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton have found – that PSR limit the ability to close the gap.

“You mentioned the PSR rules and Leicester but on the other side of that, Ipswich spent a few quid. They are almost gone. They had to beat Wolves to give themselves a fighting chance but same old problems.

“Whoever comes up from the Championship whether it be Leeds, Burnley or Sheffield United – they will have the same problem as the three that came up. There needs to be a re-think, I’m not a fan of it [PSR].”

How much will Leeds have to spend to stand any kind of chance?
Speaking in a completely hypothetical sense given Leeds have plenty of work to do to even go up to the Premier League, Leeds are going to have to spend big money in order to stand any chance of survival.

Ipswich and Southampton spent north of £100m, while Leicester were just under that. Adam Pope says Leeds need at least six major signings and to spend more than £100m, agreeing with Tony Mowbray.

However, Leeds’ 2023-24 financial figures have been released and it shows Leeds suffered their biggest-ever loss of more than £60m in one year. While it will have changed, Leeds owed £142m in transfers.

Phil Hay believes the presence of The 49ers and RedBull give Leeds a chance of survival and more so than they did under Andrea Radrizzani. But, the gap is widening while PSR rules make it harder to survive.
