After getting Champions League football, Newcastle now really want ‘magnificent’ player

Now that Champions League football is confirmed for next season Newcastle United can now start clearly thinking about their summer transfer plans with Kieran Tierney high on their list.

For a while it was speculated that Newcastle had drafted several transfer strategies going into the summer which all depended on which, if any, European competition the Magpies would find themselves in next season.

After Monday night’s 0-0 draw with Leicester it is now confirmed that Newcastle will be standing alongside Europe’s elite in the Champions League next season, which also means they get to go with their top transfer strategy.

Newcastle will go for Kieran Tierney as part of their top transfer strategy
A report in inews has confirmed that Newcastle had several strategies but went on to suggest that Kieran Tierney of Arsenal was part of the top-tier strategy and now that we know that’s the one they’re using, a move for Tierney may be imminent.

It has been speculated for a while that Newcastle would launch a £30million raid for Tierney, who was described by Neil Lennon as ‘magnificent‘, but could now face competition from Premier League champions Manchester City who are prepared to take Tierney in a swap deal for Joao Cancelo.

The irony there is that it was the arrival of another Manchester City player at Arsenal, Oleksandr Zinchenko, that stifled Tierney’s career at the Emirates. Zinchenko’s form this season has meant that Tierney has barely got a sniff of first-team action.

Newcastle need to improve the left-back position for next season
Newcastle will be very keen to add an overlapping left-back to the side for next season with Dan Burn not being so comfortable going forward, also not being a natural full-back. Matt Targett hasn’t had the best of season’s since making his loan move permanent, being outed from his natural position by a centre-back.

Tierney would be ideal for what Newcastle are looking for, albeit with the caveat that he has a reputation for always being injured. Callum Wilson had a similar reputation until Eddie Howe managed it properly this season, so I’m sure he could do the same with Tierney.

The interest from Manchester City is a bit of a worry, when for the longest time it looked like Newcastle would have a clear run at the 25-year-old, but the Scotsman has spoken of a desire to move closer to his family, and you don’t get any closer than Newcastle if you want to stay in the Premier League.
