Mason Greenwood transfer price surges as Man Utd eye major windfall

July 30, 2025

Twelve months have passed since Mason Greenwood parted ways with Manchester United, and the striker’s value has surged beyond what it was on English soil.

United sold Greenwood for £26.5 million last summer, deciding to let him go after a suspension and a stint with Getafe. He then joined Marseille in France, where he netted 22 goals and contributed six assists in 36 appearances, propelling Les Phoceens to a second-place finish.

As the transfer window remains open for another month, and whispers of another move haven’t dissipated. Rumours of a Saudi Arabian transfer have persisted throughout the window, with Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Nassr reportedly interested.

Although no deal has gained momentum, the Saudi Arabian window remains open until September 2, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Due to a 50% sell-on clause in Greenwood’s Marseille contract, United will be keeping a watchful eye on developments for the remainder of the window.

Any potential profit Marseille makes on the forward will be split with United, which could result in a windfall for the Reds. Meaning that United’s bank balance could be topped up with an extra £15m.

According to French outlet L’Equipe, a source close to the situation revealed: “Basically, if OM sells him for €50m (£43.2m), they will have brought for him for €50m (£43.2m) and will have recovered €25m (£21.6m).

“Given his performances, the strong interest shown by Saudi clubs this summer, and his age, it’s a safe bet that Greenwood will leave for a hefty sum.”

In January 2022, United suspended Mason Greenwood following allegations of rape and sexual assault, which were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Football data site, Transfermarkt, suggests Greenwood’s market value is at an all-time high since his departure from United.

Prior to his move to Marseille, his worth had bounced back from a significant dip during his suspension to over £20m.

Fast forward a year and Greenwood’s estimated value now stands at a whopping €40m (£34.6m), already surpassing what United pocketed for him a year ago.

If he were to be sold for that amount, United would be in for a further £15m windfall.

CIES Football Observatory rates Greenwood even higher. Their top estimate for the 23 year old currently sits at €57m (£49.3m) with their lowest being €49m (£42.3m), figures that would certainly play into United’s hands.
