Arsenal, Manchester United rejected late move for Marco Asensio

September 3, 2024

Intermediaries reportedly offered Arsenal and Manchester United the chance to sign Marco Asensio on the deadline day, before the two clubs rejected the opportunity.

Marco Asensio could have moved to the Premier League on the deadline day of the summer transfer window. Intermediaries offered Manchester United and Arsenal the chance to sign the former Real Madrid star on August 30. However, the two Premier League clubs snubbed the opportunity to sign the Spanish forward from Paris Saint-Germain.

Marco Asensio and his PSG journey so far
Marco Asensio has blown hot and cold since joining Paris Saint-Germain in a Bosman move last year after his contract with Real Madrid ran out. The Spaniard spent eight years with Real Madrid before calling time on his spell with Los Blancos, although he has not set the stage alight thus far at PSG.

Nevertheless, Kylian Mbappe’s departure as a free agent before joining Real Madrid has served Asensio well, as he has been a regular in the final third thus far this season. The 28-year-old also has a decent tally of one goal and one assist in three Ligue 1 outings this term.

However, the Spain international might have moved to the Premier League last month, as the Ligue 1 champions were ready to part ways with him ahead of the summer transfer deadline in England. Intermediaries offered him to Arsenal and Manchester United, with the two Premier League clubs rejecting the opportunity to secure his services.

Asensio could have sealed Premier League move
Manchester United could have done with a player like Marco Asensio, considering they decided to loan Jadon Sancho to Chelsea. The West London club should complete all the formalities to trigger the mandatory purchase clause in the agreement with Manchester United. However, the Red Devils did not sign a replacement, although Asensio’s £300,000-a-week wages might have played a part in that.

As for Arsenal, they rounded up their summer transfer business by signing Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea. So, it is hardly surprising that the North London club snubbed the offer to sign Asensio from PSG. While Sterling also pockets around £300,000-a-week wages, Arsenal will not pay that much to the Englishman.

While Arsenal and Manchester United did not sign the Spanish forward on the deadline day of the summer transfer window, he might not fret that, considering he is a regular in the final third. It will be interesting to see how the 28-year-old former Real Madrid star fares for PSG this term.
