Max Eberl agrees with Uli Hoeneß that Bayern Munich does need to sell some players
There are still a handful of transfers that Bayern Munich is trying to get over the line before the summer transfer window closes at the end of next month, but they also still need to sell some players to be able to balance their books, per se. They do not want to wind up spending an aggressive amount more than they would make from outbound players, potentially leaving them in the red for transfer revenue.
As things currently stand, Bayern has signed Hiroki Ito, Michael Olise, and Joao Palhinha in addition to bringing back Josip Stanisic from his loan stint with Bayer Leverkusen. From those players, Bayern has spent a total of around 125 million euros, but they have yet to make an outbound sale this summer, bar Malik Tillman joining PSV Eindhoven on a permanent basis after a loan spell there, generating roughly 12 million euros for Bayern.
From the Rekordmeister’s training camp in Tegernsee recently, former club president Uli Hoeneß had made bold claims that the club would not make anymore signings this summer unless a handful of players were sold along with it. While that might not have given the majority of Bayern fans the biggest boost in optimism, board member for sport Max Eberl recently echoed that sentiment in a press conference ahead of the preseason tour trip to South Korea.
“Uli Hoeneß didn’t say anything different to what we’ve discussed internally. We’ve completed three signings and recalled Josip Stanišić. We’ve already spent money. We also want to make space for young players who are doing very well. Income and expenditure have to balance each other out to some extent. We have our orders, both sporting and financial, and Christoph Freund and I try to fulfil them,” Eberl explained, doubling down on the statements made by Hoeneß.
As things stand, Bayern is still working on selling both Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt to Manchester United, but the case is far more clear for the Moroccan as opposed to the Dutch international. Leroy Sane has also recently been linked with a potential move to Arsenal this summer, but nothing is concrete as of yet. Even Joshua Kimmich has been linked with a summer departure a la heavy interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
At this stage, only the Mazraoui to Manchester United deal seems close to happening, but a lot can happen between now and the end of August for both outbound and inbound players for Bayern.
