Napoli Center-Back Close to Replacing Buongiorno at Torino

July 18, 2024

Talks between Tornio and Napoli over Leo Ostigard’s switch to the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino are reportedly in ‘advanced stages.’ According to TMW, the Granata could sign the Norwegian center-back on loan with a mandatory purchase option in a deal worth €7 million.

Torino lost their defensive cornerstone when they sanctioned Alessandro Buongiorno’s transfer to Napoli earlier this month. Antonio Conte’s side paid a hefty price tag to sign the Italy international, forking out €35m upfront with an additional €5m in performance-related bonuses.

New Torino manager Paolo Vanoli has a massive gap to close. He has identified Ostigard as a decent solution, with the Granata inching closer to completing another deal with Napoli. The Partenopei signed the 24-year-old from Brighton & Hove Albion for €5.5m plus add-ons in 2022.

However, Ostigard’s career at the Diego Maradona Stadium has never taken off. Last season, he made 32 appearances across all competitions, registering 20 starts. But Conte’s arrival will likely push the seasoned journeyman through the exit door.

Before moving to Napoli, Ostigard performed for Genoa. Therefore, he boasts a wealth of Serie A experience. Despite his turbulent spell in south Italy, he’d be a decent signing for Torino. In the meantime, his departure would unlock Napoli’s effort to reinforce their backline.

Conte’s men reportedly lead the race for ex-Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso. Yet, they must offload Ostigard before intensifying their pursuit of the highly-rated Spanish star. Time could be of the essence, with Inter closely following the situation.
