Julian Nagelsmann feels Vincent Kompany can change things for the better at Bayern Munich

For a decent while after it was announced that Thomas Tuchel would be leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the 2023/24 season, the possibility of a Julian Nagelsmann return to the club was on the cards. At the time, the former Bayern, RB Leipzig and TSG Hoffenheim manager was under contract with the DFB to be the Germany manager through the end of this summer’s European Championships, but he has since renewed his contract with the DFB and will remain manager of the national team through World Cup 2026.

For board member for sport Max Eberl in particular, Nagelsmann was a favorite candidate to replace Tuchel, but the DFB ultimately felt it would be best for German football as a whole for him to stay with the national team long-term.

Several different managerial candidates have been linked with Bayern after Nagelsmann committed his future to the German national team, but Vincent Kompany is the man that has ultimately become the man for Bayern. The former Manchester City defender and Belgian international took Burnley to the Premier League after a tenure as RSC Anderlecht boss in Belgium, but then got relegated with the Clarets at the end of this season.

Nagelsmann was in attendance at the Olympiastadion for the DFB-Pokal final between Bayer Leverkusen and FC Kaiserslautern, where he was asked for his thoughts on Bayern bringing in Kompany as Tuchel’s successor. Nagelsmann admitted that he did not know too much of the Belgian manager, but added that he feels this fresh look for Bayern can be a real positive for the club.

“I don’t know him particularly well or personally, but I wish him much success. I’ve heard he is a very good coach. He has learned a lot under some great coaches. So he will do well. The club is in transition. It’s good for the club that they didn’t win the league title. A young coach can change more things now that they haven’t won the title,” Nagelsmann explained to Das Erste during coverage for the cup final.

Bayern will pay Burnley a €10.5m fixed plus success related add-ons to have him move clubs as the two sides had to negotiate a fee based off of differences in valuations of the manager. Burnley was initially asking for €20m for the manager, which is higher than Bayern wanted to pay.
