Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies addresses Real Madrid rumours
Bayern Munich wideman Alphonso Davies has commented on speculation linking him with a summer transfer to Real Madrid.
The 23-year-old became the first-ever Canadian to score in the Champions League knockout stages when he stunned the Santiago Bernabeu with a superb long-range strike in Wednesday’s second-leg against Los Blancos in the semi-finals.
However, Davies and his Bayern teammates were left heartbroken after Real Madrid pulled off a miraculous comeback in the dying embers thanks to two late strikes from substitute Joselu, preventing the Bundesliga club from setting up an all-German final with Borussia Dortmund.
Davies has been a first-team regular throughout the campaign for Bayern, chipping in with two goals and five assists in 40 appearances across all competitions whilst operating predominantly as a left-back.
However, the former Vancouver Whitecaps youngster will soon be entering the final year of his contract at the Allianz Arena, and his long-term future at the club is believed to be uncertain.
Davies weighing up Bayern future?
Earlier this year, Bayern director Max Eberl confirmed that an offer of a new contract has been tabled for Davies and he responded to rumours of Real Madrid’s interest in the player.
“We sent Alphonso a very concrete, appreciative offer. At some point in life you have to say yes or no. Real Madrid hasn’t contacted us,” Eberl told reporters in March.
As things stand, there have been no indications to suggest that Davies is keen to commit his future to the Bavarians, who are therefore at risk of losing the left-flanker for free in the summer of 2025, potentially forcing them to cash in on him this summer.
Real Madrid have been continuously linked with a move for the 45-cap Canada international, with manager Carlo Ancelotti believed to be open to the possibility of strengthening his options on the left side of defence.
Davies offers teasing update on Bayern future amid Real Madrid links
In response to those rumours, Davies has delivered a teasing update on his Bayern future, refusing to rule out a potential departure from the Allianz Arena.
Speaking to reporters after Bayern’s midweek Champions League defeat, as quoted by 90min, Davies said: “Will I play here at the Bernabeu? Right now, my agent is talking to Bayern. Whatever happens, I’m very grateful to Bayern.”
Davies has spent the last four-and-a-half seasons at Bayern and has made almost 200 senior appearances, winning a total of 13 trophies including five Bundesliga titles and the 2019-20 Champions League.
It is thought that the prospect of a fresh challenge could appeal to Davies, and a transfer either this summer of in 2025 seems increasingly likely, especially if he turns down Bayern’s latest contract offer.
A potential switch to Real Madrid would see Davies compete for starts at left-back with Ferland Mendy, who is allegedly in line for a new contract.
