Man City handed imminent title boost as Arsenal learn fate after Tottenham defeat

May 3, 2024

Tottenham’s derby defeat at Chelsea, may have given Manchester City a boost in the title run-in as Spurs have essentially nothing riding on their game to come against the reigning champions

Manchester City will head to Tottenham this month, knowing Spurs have taken a giant step back in their bid for Champions League qualification after the damaging 2-0 defeat to Chelsea this week.

Spurs’ hope of a fourth-place finish were dealt a blow after their defeat in the London derby at Stamford Bridge. Mauricio Pochettino’s side returned to winning ways with Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson scoring the goals for the hosts.

Pep Guardiola’s team will head to north London on Tuesday (May 14) and it is yet another must win game in their challenge for the Premier League title. It has been a nightmare fixture for City since the ‘move’ to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019.

Their 1-0 FA Cup fourth-round win earlier this year was not only the first victory at the new ground but the first (and still only) goal there too. Only one point separates City from leaders Arsenal, who will hope rivals Spurs can damage City’s title hopes.

However, a team fighting for something is a tougher test than one ‘on the beach’, and for Spurs, it could be more of the latter, knowing they have a six-point buffer to sixth-placed Manchester United. Victory for Tottenham against City on the penultimate weekend of the league season likely wouldn’t exactly turn things in their favour, given the current seven-point gap to Villa.

As for the Gunners, their remaining games are against Bournemouth, United and Everton on the final day. Liverpool meanwhile, were dealt a huge blow to their title hopes after a defeat to Everton and a draw to West Ham.

Jurgen Klopp’s team are five points from Arsenal and four from City who will play Wolves, Fulham, Spurs and West Ham in their final games. After getting knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals, City won’t win back-to-back trebles but can still lift the Premier League and the FA Cup.
