Leao insists he and Pioli ‘love each other’ after ‘strange’ beginning

February 4, 2024

Rafael Leao has revealed that he has an excellent relationship with head coach Stefano Pioli, while he also addressed his lack of goals in the league.

Leao’s last goal in the league dates back to September when he scored the winner in a 1-0 home win against Hellas Verona, meaning he has gone over four months without one in Serie A.

However, there is no doubting that the Portuguese winger continues to be an important contributor for the team, given he got the assist for Olivier Giroud’s goal against Frosinone last night.

Last season, Leao finished as the Rossoneri’s top goalscorer, scoring 15 league goals, and assisting eight times. He has assisted six times so far this season, but only scored three.

Leao spoke to DAZN before the game against Frosinone last night and he stressed how much Pioli is supporting him, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

How would you describe your current moment?

“My team supports me, even the coach. When I go on the pitch I always try to help them even when I don’t score goals. I know what responsibility I have but I have no pressure, I’m calm. I think I always do my best every match, first the team and then the individuals.”

The fans want you to score…

“I don’t have to force it, the goal will come. First I try to play for the team, if the goal comes, it will come. I always think before each match that it might arrive. I have to play for the team and if I play for the team then it comes.”
