England manager Gareth Southgate supports Englishmen going abroad to play football

December 29, 2023

The mindset of English players having to stay in England to prove themselves is made commonplace by the English themselves, that going abroad will not fare well for their national players and the said players will get slated for doing so. England manager Gareth Southgate, however, is in favor of his countrymen like Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane and Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham proving their worth abroad as the pressure to perform pushes them to be in their best form.

“Harry [Kane] and Jude [Bellingham] are both playing exceptionally well at their clubs. They’re obviously both at huge football clubs so they have to perform under pressure every week. That’s the sort of environment we want our players in,” Southgate said.

A lot of Englishmen went abroad and went on to become world beaters such as Jadon Sancho (Manchester City to Borussia Dortmund) and Kevin Keegan (Liverpool to Hamburger SV) in the 1980s. Steve Bloomer, an Englishman, went to Germany in 1914 to coach the sport which is the reason why the sport became so popular there.
