Graeme Souness shares who’s more likely to win the league… Liverpool or Man City

December 5, 2023

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has weighed in on the Premier League title race.

Having retired from punditry on Sky Sports at the end of last season, some will have been missing Souness’ take on things. Although not always popular, the former Reds captain often made a lot of sense, too.

Thankfully, the 70-year-old hasn’t completely gone away. And after getting him on the show yesterday, TalkSPORT made sure to ask Souness about the current goings on at the top of the Premier League table.

“They [Manchester City] still for me are the favourites, although I’ve got a sneaky feeling for my old team,” explained the pundit.

“I said at the start of the season, I think you’re going to have to finish in front of Liverpool to win this league. The reason for that is that Liverpool have got lots of goals in their team. If you’ve got goals in your team it means you can win games without being at your best.”

Souness sends Liverpool title message
Plenty of a Liverpool persuasion will currently be sharing a similar view to that of their former skipper.

Yes, City are still favourites, of that there is no doubt. Despite their recent lean form, Pep Guardiola’s side are only a point behind the Reds and three behind leaders Arsenal.

After winning three league titles on the bounce, you’d always back City to do it again.

But there is a reason that no team has managed four Premier League wins in a row. With quality teams like Liverpool and Arsenal challenging you, it can be hard to go again.

There are signs that the relentless winning has just caught up to the Citizens slightly.

With Liverpool very much staying with them, there is certainly a window of opportunity creaking open now.

As always, the festive period will be key to determining whether or not the Reds’ challenge can be taken seriously. The game against Arsenal at Anfield on December 23rd is looking absolutely huge.

The Gunners are the not so dark horse of this race that Souness doesn’t allude to. However, when push comes to shove, you still get the feeling that – as it so often has been – this battle will be between City and Liverpool.
