Lothar Matthäus says Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller has to change clubs to get more playing time

November 28, 2023

Will Thomas Müller leave Bayern Munich?

Former Bayern Munich and Germany great Lothar Matthäus is examining Thomas Müller’s current situation as a bench player in Bavaria and does not think the veteran will last much longer with such a limited role.

“Thomas Müller’s situation looks like a gradual exit. Everything that comes from Bayern on the subject does not correspond to what we see week in, week out…it’s difficult to deal with this situation and it’s difficult to be satisfied with this situation,” Matthäus told Sky Sport (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “This topic is of course discussed among the fans, but Thomas Tuchel has to line up to the best of his knowledge and belief. Müller has a bonus due to his services to the club, but this is not enough to gain the coach’s trust to help the team more often from the start or at all.”

Matthäus went on to say that he thinks Müller wants to keep going with his career.

“I can’t imagine Thomas wanting to stop. He loves playing football too much for that. At Bayern, however, he will no longer get the minutes he got two years ago. If he has the confidence to start like he did two years ago, then he has to change clubs. You have to say that openly,” said Matthäus. “It’s difficult to imagine Müller leaving FC Bayern, but it was also difficult to imagine Harry Kane moving to Munich, even though Kane is three years younger.”

As of now, only Manchester United seems to be interested in Müller and even those rumors are tepid at best. If the 34-year-old wants to play more, he likely will have to take a pay cut wherever he lands — something that Bayern Munich might be planning to offer Müller anyway for his reduced role.
