Arsenal have their own Vincent Kompany as national media react to victory over Burnley

November 12, 2023

Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Premier League on Saturday as they hosted newly promoted Burnley

After a patchy week or so with results, Arsenal went into the tie with Burnley on Saturday in hope of an ideal send off into the November international break. The Gunners have had to navigate a busy month of fixtures as they featured in the Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup.

A 5-0 thrashing of Sheffield United and two victories over Sevilla in Europe were highlights in an otherwise tough run of form, which included a draw with Chelsea, a defeat to Newcastle and a loss to West Ham that would dump them out of the Carabao Cup. It meant that the clash on Saturday with Burnley was key to regaining some form before the two-week break.

Mikel Arteta’s side managed to do just that as Leandro Trossard opened the scoring on the brink of half-time with a brave header at the back post, which saw him collide with the goalkeeper and upright. The Clarets put up a fight as Josh Brownhill brought his team level, but it didn’t last long as just three minutes later, William Saliba restored Arsenal’s lead.

A two-goal cushion was secured just 15 minutes from time as Oleksandr Zinchenko made his way onto the scoresheet, but there was another twist at hand. Midfielder Fabio Vieira had a far from ideal cameo on Saturday as he received a red card for a challenge in the final five minutes.

While that will now result in a suspension, it wasn’t costly in the game itself as the Gunners held firm and took all three points on the day. As usual, the national media have been reacting to the result and the performance, giving their thoughts on the match that played out.
