Real Madrid starter suffered injury during warm-up

November 9, 2023

Injuries refuse to leave Real Madrid alone. The club continue to pick up one fitness issue after another and it is remarkable that they have done as well as they have, considering the circumstances as well as the fact that Los Blancos do not have much depth in several positions across the pitch.

Many fans might have been confused to see Andriy Lunin in goal when they switched on their televisions. Kepa Arrizabalaga had been named as the starter in goal, and expectedly so, when the teams were announced.

As reported by AS, Kepa was injured during the warm-up. The Spaniard suffered severe muscle discomfort in his right leg during the preparation before the Champions League match and required the help of doctors. He will undergo tests to see the extent of the injury.

For his part, Lunin did well and even saved a penalty brilliantly early in the game. If that had gone in, the match could have turned out differently with SC Braga sitting deeper to protect their lead.

Real Madrid already have Thibaut Courtois out for the foreseeable future. The Belgian tore his ACL before the season even started.

That was the reason Kepa was signed from Chelsea on loan. While the Spaniard was heavily criticised during his stint in the Premier League, he has done quite well for Real Madrid so far and there have even been rumours of signing him on a permanent basis in the summer if he is available for a suitable transfer fee.

Thus, Kepa picking up an injury is not good news for Real Madrid. Its extent remains to be seen. If the Spaniard is put on the sidelines for any considerable length of time, Lunin will take his place between the posts. The 24-year-old did very well against SC Braga but can he do that on a consistent basis?
