UEFA appoint big hitter to referee Celtic v Atletico Madrid

October 24, 2023

UEFA have turned to the highly experienced Felix Zwayer to referee Wednesday’s match between Celtic and Atletico Madrid.

It is almost 50 years on since the Spanish side booted Jimmy Johnstone black and blue in a European Cup semi-final but the stories from that match has been passed down through generations of supporters.

Two weeks ago Zwayer refereed the Euro 2024 qualifier between Holland and France, last month he took charge of his 28th Champions League match when Arsenal beat PSV Eindhoven 4-0.

Celtic were left asking questions about decisions in their opening Group Stage matches which were refereed by officials from Bosnia and Lithuania.

Gus Lagerbielke and Odin Thiago Holm return from suspension but it seems likely that Brendan Rodgers will start with the XI that beat Kilmarnock and Hearts.

With Atletico and Lazio sitting on four points Celtic really have to win at home tomorrow to retain hopes of remaining in contention, on Matchday 4 and 5 the hoops are away in Madrid and Rome.
