Real Madrid ‘plotting Alphonso Davies approach’

September 11, 2023

Real Madrid are reportedly interested in adding Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies to their squad during the 2024 summer transfer window.
The left-sided player has been with Bayern since the 2018-19 campaign and has since established himself as one of the best in the world in that area of the pitch.

Although the Canada international’s progress has been hindered by injury at times, eight goals and 28 assists have come from 157 appearances in all competitions.

However, Davies has now reached a stage where he has less than two years remaining on the contract that he started in 2019, putting Bayern in a position where they would naturally like to renew.

Davies remains a key player under head coach Thomas Tuchel, chipping in with three assists from as many outings with Bayern making a perfect start to the new Bundesliga campaign.

Nevertheless, according to Marca, Davies has little intention of penning fresh terms at the Allianz Arena.

The report suggests that the 22-year-old is eager to take any opportunity that may come to represent Real Madrid, who are long-term admirers.

As it stands, Los Blancos cannot claim to be short in the left-back area with Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia, a recent arrival, both at the disposal of Carlo Ancelotti.

Furthermore, David Alaba is capable of switching from central defence when required, as is the versatile Nacho Fernandez who can be deployed across the backline.

That said, none of those names are regarded as members of the squad who could become first choice in the long term, with Mendy expected to be sold once a suitable offer arrives for his signature.

Garcia has started each of Real’s opening four La Liga games during 2023-24, but the 24-year-old is yet to show that he can fill the position at one of the biggest clubs in the world on a weekly basis.

From Bayern’s perspective, they are unlikely to risk losing Davies on a free transfer in 2025 if he continually refuses to entertain the offer of a new contract.

Tuchel already has a like-for-like alternative in Raphael Guerreiro, yet the German would almost certainly enter the market if funds are raised from any sale of Davies.
