United States star lined up for Premier League transfer after unpaid wages dispute

September 1, 2023

Burnley could be active during the final part of the transfer window as the deadline approaches with one USMNT star available as a risk-free option following his release

Vincent Kompany could be set to strengthen his Burnley squad with a US international as the summer transfer deadline fast approaches.

The Clarets have made a host of significant additions this summer but are without a win in their opening couple of fixtures since returning to the top flight. The Lancashire outfit’s business looks set to continue if they can beat a trio of Championship clubs to the signature of USMNT star Reggie Cannon.

The 25-year-old is currently a free agent after he departed Portuguese side Boavista, who he left following a dispute over alleged unpaid wages. The defender has had offers to return to his home country but would prefer to stay in Europe, according to the Daily Mail.

The former 28-time international is also being monitored by Championship clubs Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City. A pacey modern-day full-back, it is likely that the American would represent a largely risk-free signing for any of his potential suitors.

Cannon made 89 appearances during his time in Portugal, with this stint having come off the back of his career breakthrough at FC Dallas in MLS. Prior to this, the Illinois-born star played 20 games as a college player at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

As it stands, Kompany remains pretty balanced on the chances of the Clarets making further additions before the end of the window, especially given the unpredictable nature of the market. He explained to the Burnley Express: “We don’t control when other clubs make their players available, so if a player is available we will always look into it.

“I don’t know if everybody wants to say it this way, but I think you’re competing with every player in the world that’s available to the club you’re playing for, because you always have a duty as a club and as a manager to make the team the best you can.”

Explaining further, the former Manchester City defender stated: If you look at my phone, while we’re speaking I’ll probably get pinged 15 players. It’s closer to what you experience if you go to the markets in Marrakesh than what you think it is.

“That’s how the market behaves. We try and stay calm and consistent and have a deliberate plan of action, but it changes constantly at the moment.”

Burnley have made a number of big-money signings this summer, with the arrivals of Zeki Amdouni, James Trafford and Aaron Ramsey among the standouts. The Turf Moor outfit returned to the Premier League this season after winning promotion from the Championship as title winners.
