David de Gea ‘REJECTS contract offer from Inter Milan’ as the Italians look to replace Andre Onana

July 22, 2023

David de Gea has rejected a move to Inter Milan to replace Andre Onana, after the Cameroonian’s move to Old Trafford.

Man United finally confirmed the signing of Onana on Thursday, with the 27-year-old replacing De Gea as the club’s new first-choice goalkeeper.

However, according to The Daily Record, the Spaniard was offered the chance to replace Onana at the San Siro, but rejected the chance to move to the Serie A club.

Inter were ready to offer De Gea a salary worth £4m-a-year, but the 32-year-old is holding out for a deal worth closer to £9m, with wages around £200,000-per-week.

With De Gea having turned down the club’s offer, Inter will now turn their attention to Anatoliy Trubin from Shakhtar Donetsk and Yann Sommer from Bayern Munich.

It is thought that De Gea is keen on moving back to LaLiga and would favour a return to his former club Atletico Madrid. However, his wage expectation could prove to be a stumbling block.

Sevilla could offer him a route back to Spain, should their highly-rated shot-stopper Yassine Bounou leave this summer, with both Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich linked with the Morocco international.

De Gea’s last United contract was worth over £52m over the four years – with signing-on fees and bonuses included – and if De Gea wants to remain one of the world’s highest-paid goalies his only option could be a move to the Saudi Pro League.

Earlier this month he brought down the curtain on his United career after 12 years in Manchester, where he was named the club’s Player of the Year on four different occasions.

The Spanish stopper played 545 times for the club, and holds the record for the most clean sheets kept in a Manchester United goalkeeper shirt.

Talks had continued with the Red Devils and De Gea right up to the expiry of his contract at Old Trafford, with reports a framework of a new deal had been initially agreed – on reduced financial terms.

However, after the new deal was not signed off by boss Erik ten Hag and it led to both sides deciding to go their separate ways.

Instead, Ten Hag made clear he wanted to be reunited with Onana at United, having previously worked with together at Ajax. The Cameroon international has signed in a deal worth £43.7m, penning a five-year contract with the club.
