PGMOL apologise to Brighton and admit VAR should have awarded them a penalty against Tottenham

The PGMOL has apologised to Brighton and admitted VAR made a mistake by not awarding them a penalty against Tottenham on Saturday.

Referee chief Howard Webb has been in touch with Brighton and said they should have been given a spot-kick for a tackle by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on Kaoru Mitoma.

As Mitoma controlled the ball in the box with the score at 1-1, Spurs midfielder Hojberg stood on his boot and the Japan international went down.

Referee Stuart Attwell waved away the initial Brighton appeals and was not asked to reverse the decision or go to the TV monitor for a second look, despite a VAR check.

Harry Kane went on to score a late winner as Spurs secured a controversial 2-1 win.

Brighton also had two goals ruled out by VAR for handball and have demanded an explanation from the PGMOL.

After the Seagulls suffered a defeat that dented their hopes of European qualification, Brighton captain Lewis Dunk said: “I don’t see what VAR is here for. You bring it in for big decisions and don’t make big decisions. What is the point of it? He has clearly fouled him.”
