Maignan Ready for Milan Comeback After Five Months
Mike Maignan finally seems ready for his comeback in the Milan goal against Atalanta after five months out, while Ismael Bennacer and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are also preparing to feature.
The Rossoneri are joint third in Serie A with Roma after their 1-0 win over Monza on Saturday and also have the 1-0 advantage over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League Round of 16.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Maignan has at last fully recovered from that recurring calf strain and is expected to take the gloves from Ciprian Tatarusanu for next week’s showdown with Atalanta.
Maignan first picked up the muscular injury in his calf during international duty with France on September 22 and has not played a competitive match since then.
The recurring strain also forced him to miss the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where his nation reached the Final, and his last appearance at club level was the 2-1 defeat to Napoli on September 18.
He had seemed on the verge of a return only to suffer a relapse, prompting the medics to proceed with extreme caution.
That period of waiting now appears to be over and the Scudetto winner can take back the gloves.
He’s not the only reinforcement, as Bennacer is also now fully recovered from a femoral bicep strain he suffered in January, while Ibrahimovic has been on the Serie A bench for the last couple of games, waiting for his first appearance since undergoing knee surgery in May 2022.
However, the Swedish veteran is not in the Champions League squad list, so won’t be able to play against Tottenham on March 8.
