PSG 0-1 Bayern Munich: Three Things We Learned

February 15, 2023

Bayern Munich managed to outlast Paris Saint-Germain last night in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie.

In a repeat of the 2020 Champions League final, Kingsley Coman scored the winning goal on the night against his former side as Bayern took a big step towards the quarter-finals.

Today, we’ll be taking a look at a few of our big takeaways from another important night of European action.

Father time is coming

In a fun tidbit, Paris Saint-Germain started Warren Zaire-Emery – a young man born in 2006. At 16 years and 343 days, he became the youngest player to ever start a Champions League knockout game. That statistic, in itself, is ridiculous and reminds us all of how quickly football is evolving. With each and every passing year, the level is getting higher and higher, and PSG continue to serve as a huge piece of the puzzle.

Mbappe lifts PSG

When Kylian Mbappe was introduced in the 57th minute, PSG finally seemed to wake up from their slumber. They hadn’t been playing well at all prior to that but they got the kick up the backside they needed, to the point whereby they even put the ball in the back of the net. Unfortunately, a narrow offside call ensured they went home empty-handed, but it offers reassurance of some kind for the second leg.

Advantage Bayern

Bayern Munich may not have all of their star players fit and ready to go, but this performance proved that they are still one of the best teams in Europe – and that much, now, is undeniable. The German giants just know how to win on the big stage and given that they’re heading back home for the second leg, it makes all the sense in the world for them to be viewed as one of the favourites to go all the way now.
