Reds can’t let Newcastle sign ‘very interesting player’

January 30, 2023

Liverpool can’t allow Newcastle United to strike their proposed deal for Sander Berge. It’s a perfect opportunity for the Reds.

There is a race for Sander Berge right now. As the Athletic puts it, Sheffield United need money and their cushion in the Championship promotion spots could allow Berge to leave in the next two days.

The report claims Fulham are in front for the Norwegian. But Liverpool are there, too – Jurgen Klopp is said to be a ‘firm fan’ of the midfielder.

Now the Daily Mail claims Newcastle United want in, however. FFP restrictions would see them offer a loan deal, though, presumably with an option or obligation to buy. With Jonjo Shelvey set for Nottingham Forest, they’re eager to get this one done.

But if that kind of deal is on the cards right now, Liverpool cannot let the Magpies strike it. This is a deal that’s perfect for Klopp.

Sander Berge to Liverpool

Liverpool are reluctant to spend a significant amount of cash right now. Their plans to sign Jude Bellingham in the summer necessitate playing it safe until that deal is sorted – or falls apart.

A loan deal would be ideal, then. It’s largely why they signed Arthur Melo on a temporary basis back in the summer and we think Berge could be another. He’s a very good player, after all, as well as one Liverpool have tracked for a long time.

Klopp reportedly told Berge he was a ‘very interesting’ player back in 2019. He’s followed him for a while and supposedly remains a fan, says that Athletic report. The Norwegian would be a fine addition right now – at a time when the Reds’ midfield is in dire need of fresh ideas.

Now, the Mail admit that Sheffield United could be against a loan deal if they’re chasing immediate cash. But if they’re open to it, Liverpool can’t allow Newcastle to get Berge like that. It’s too good of an opportunity to miss.
